Renting A Storage Unit? Avoid Placing These Things In It
If you're looking to clear space around your home, a great option is to use a storage unit to gain some additional square footage that you're lacking. It can be a wonderful place to store seasonal decorations, baby clothes and toys for another kid, and other things that you want to hold onto for another day. However, not all things should go into your storage unit, and you should avoid placing the following things in one.
Food
While it's okay to store canned foods in storage in case of an emergency, you generally want to avoid putting any food in your storage unit. While this makes sense for the most part, many people don't think about food for their pets that they may be placing in storage. The bag may be sealed, but it can still attract pests and create a very bad odor if the bag is torn open. The last thing you want to do is go into the storage unit and have everything smell like dog food.
Living Plants
Doing some remodeling and trying to find a place to put your living plants around the house? A storage unit is definitely not a good place to put them, even if you plan on visiting regularly and watering them. They will lack the sunlight they need to stay alive, and eventually die and start to decompose. Living plants also can attract pests, which is not good for the items in your storage unit. Keep plants away and your belongings will be fine.
Firearms
The hot temperatures of a storage unit are not a good place to store firearms. There is a huge safety risk due to the explosive nature of bullets. There may also be local gun laws that prevent you from putting your firearms into a storage unit. In general, it is best to keep firearms in a safe that is in your home to ensure that only you have access to them.
Chemicals
Chemicals are definitely off limits for a storage unit, since the flammable material can explode under the right circumstances. Cleaning solutions, fertilizers, and other flammable materials are dangerous to be placed in storage. Not only are you putting your belongings at risk, but all the belongings in the surrounding storage units rented by others.
